The Winnipeg General Strike
The Winnipeg General Strike was the largest unemployment and inflation Canada has ever seen contributing to the postwar labour unrest. This occured May 15 1919 and lasted until June 25th 1919. This occured when the manegment and metal trades broke down in the Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council. In less than a day over 30 000 workers left their jobs. Both men and women left the jobs closing factorie, crippling their trading market and stopped their trains. The stike was cordinated by the central strike commitee that is made up of people from both sides of the Winnipeg trades and Labour Council. The Federal government was afraid the strike would spread to other cities causing Senator Gideon Robertson and more went to Winnipeg to meet with the committee. The Federal government funded the employers and everyone else was told to return to work immideately or face dissmissal.
