1Canada was originally a French colony but after the Seven year war, in 1763, France gave nearly all of its colonies to Britain. This meant in 1763, Canada formally became apart of the British Empire . In 1914, the major six powers of Europe were split up and turned against each other, with the acceptance of Italy. Britain, France and Russia came together and formed the Triple Entente which later was know has “The Allies”. On the other side, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, later known as the “Central Powers”.2 The allies initially were brought together by the treaty of London. Later on in the war other countries were becoming a part of either The Allies or The Central Power. Some countries did maintain to be a neutral country. Britain’s colonies were brought into be a part of The Allies, this included Canada. 4 Canadian divisons took part in the battle of Neuve Chapelle. Canada had no choice but to join forces with Britian. In April Canadians fought in the second battle of Ypres. From 1914 to 1918 Canada's naval particiption was very limited, it wonly contained two small cruisers. Thousands of people went to serve with the Royal Navy.
