The King-Byng Affair
The King-Byng affair started in1926. It was a constitutional crisis pitting the powers of The Prime Minister against the Governor General. This whole crisis began when Prime Minister William lyon Mackenzie King asked Governor general Lord Julian Byng Of Vimy to start over and do fresh elections. Byng refused the Kings offer. Byng then insisted that the conservatives to form a government below Arthur Meighen who was leader of the conservative party at the time. King took a step back and informed everyone he would no longer be Prime Minister. Meighan stepped up with the conservative party saying they would be the acting ministers. King and his fellow parlament did not like this approach as he was supposed to reisgn his seat and be elected in. This caused a new election. This election took place on September 14 1926. The liberals and conservatives took a dirty approach in this election. When the election was over and King was re-elected as Prime Minister, the whole King-Byng affair crisis ended. No governor general ever refused the advice of another Prime Minister.
